Understanding Your Sensor and Transmitter

A Transmitter Detector assembly is a Detector that houses a sensor for a specific target gas, and a Transmitter which powers the Detector and uses its output signal to display the concentration of combustible, oxygen or toxic gases present. The Transmitter with Detector is intended to monitor, display and alarm if the target gas is present at a hazardous level.

The Detector can be local to the Transmitter or remote from the Transmitter (remote transmitter), depending on the target gas characteristics, such as being lighter or heavier than air, as well as the source of a potential leak or spill, and where it is necessary to monitor for spills or leaks of combustible or toxic gas and vapor. This also includes applications where oxygen deficiency is monitored by Transmitter Detector assemblies in areas where a pressurized inert gas could leak, displacing the ambient oxygen in an area where personnel are located.

In a Transmitter Detector fixed gas detection system, the Transmitter powers the Detector and sensor, where Catalytic Bead, Infrared, Photoionization and electrochemical sensors need DC voltage applied to operate. Depending on the sensor in the Detector, the sensor output is then connected to the Transmitter directly or through electronic circuitry, where the transmitter converts the Detector sensor output into a value of the gas that the Transmitter Detector fixed gas detection system has been calibrated for.

In a Transmitter Detector fixed gas detection system, the Transmitter will have an output that can be an analog 4-20mA current output, and RS-485 Modbus output, a wireless 900MHz or 2.4GHz output, HART or any number of other common communication protocols that can be connected to DCS or PLC systems, and various single point and multipoint controllers that are designed to operate with a Transmitter Detector in a fixed gas detection system.

Transmitters also have zero and span calibration capability for the combustible, oxygen, or toxic sensor that the Detector is using. Magnetic actuators for non-intrusive calibration and operation of the Transmitter Detector are integral to the Transmitter, as can be an LED or LCD display, which displays target gas values as well as menu prompts and calibration instructions for ease of use of the Transmitter Detector fixed gas detection system.
