You Need Hydrogen Sulfide Detectors

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with the characteristic foul odor of rotten eggs. Heavier than air, it’s very poisonous, corrosive, flammable, and explosive. Hydrogen Sulfide is created from the decomposition of organic materials in the absence of oxygen, such as in landfills, sewers and swamps.

Hydrogen sulfide is considered to be highly toxic to people, and can poison several different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected. One of the areas that can be affected is the human olfactory system, or sense of smell, making Hydrogen Sulfide extremely dangerous at high ppm (Parts Per Million) levels. Short-term, high-level exposure can induce immediate collapse, with a high probability of death. Because of the low toxicity levels of Hydrogen Sulfide, many personal safety gas detectors, such as those used by utility, sewage and petrochemical workers, are set to alarm at as low as 5 to 10 ppm and to go into high alarm at 15 ppm. Concentrations over 1000 ppm cause immediate collapse with loss of breathing, even after inhalation of a single breath. Although respiratory paralysis may be immediate, it can also be delayed up to 72 hours after exposure.

An H2S Sensor used in a fixed gas detection system is a consumable component and requires zero and span calibration and periodic replacement after several years of continuous use. An H2S gas Sensor can also be ranged for different levels of H2S detection, such as 0-50 ppm up to 0-5000 ppm. Typical replacement of a fixed gas detection system H2S Sensor is normally done by unplugging an old sensor from a detector head and plugging in a new sensor. H2S Sensors are sometimes “Smart,” having digital data in an on board circuit, which when connected to a gas detection transmitter is automatically uploaded into the transmitter for ease of use and continuous, maintenance-free operation.

Fixed Gas Detection systems are used for ambient area monitoring and detection of unsafe levels of Hydrogen Sulfide to alarm personnel when levels become hazardous. These fixed gas detection systems use sensors manufactured specifically to detect low levels of Hydrogen Sulfide in ranges from 0-25 to 0-5000 ppm. Common areas where Hydrogen Sulfide gas detection systems are found are waste water treatment facilities and the oil & gas industry, such as wells, production areas, and refineries. Most drilling companies continuously monitor for Hydrogen Sulfide as the gas can come up to the surface of the well at any time at levels that are dangerous to any personnel in the immediate area.

GDS Corp. has single gas Hydrogen Sulfide instruments as well as multi-point systems, where any number of Hydrogen Sulfide Sensors can be installed and connected to a central controller capable of collecting the outputs of all of the Hydrogen Sulfide Sensors and providing centralized display, control and alarm annunciation in the event of possible stink damp. Also be sure to ask about a hydrogen sulfide scrubber, hydrogen sulfide analysis, hydrogen sulfide polarity and an H2S fact sheet.
