About Process Monitors

A gas process monitor is a device that measures the value of one or more gas components in a process stream. Unlike process analyzers, such as gas chromatographs or mass spectrometers, gas process monitors use low cost infrared or electrochemical sensors to measure the value of a target gas, and are ideal solutions where the lower cost of acquisition and maintenance outweigh the need for extreme accuracy.

Process monitor designs fall into two categories. Process monitors that use electrochemical sensors to measure gases such as hydrogen sulfide, mercaptans, hydrogen and other toxic gases in streams containing less than 1% oxygen use a technique called sequencing to maximize sensor life and minimize the amount of target gas released into the atmosphere. In a sequencing system, target gas is applied to the sensor and a reading is taken. After the reading stabilizes, the value is stored and ambient air is applied to the sensor to recharge the sensor’s oxygen content.

Process monitors that use infrared sensor technology can operate on a continuous basis since an infrared sensor does not require oxygen to operate. For both types of process monitors, information on the target gas level is available via 4-20mA analog output, relays, MODBUS or Ethernet.

Process Monitor Applications

All process monitors include some form of sample conditioning. The most common requirements are filtering and pressure control. All GDS Corp gas process monitors include a stainless steel inlet filter and shutoff valve. If necessary, the system also includes a stainless steel regulator that’s rated to 2000 psig or higher.

GDS Corp has designed process monitors to measure hydrogen in catalytic bed regeneration, hydrogen sulfide, oxygen, carbon dioxide and methane in landfill biogas applications and mercaptan levels in natural gas distribution systems.
