What Is a Hydrogen Sulfide Sensor?

An H2S Sensor detects low level Hydrogen Sulfide at ppm levels (Parts Per Million). The most common technology for an H2S Sensor is an electrochemical cell. An electrochemical H2S gas Sensor is a low cost, small, replaceable component in a complete fixed gas detection system operating over wide temperature and humidity ranges, with a fast response time, operating as a diffusion detector to alarm personnel. NIOSH and OSHA set the workplace exposure values in TWA (Time Weighted Average) and STEL (Short Term Exposure Level) levels, which are averages taken over periods of time.

An H2S Sensor generates a current output equivalent to the PPM level of H2S that diffuses into the sensor through a hydrophobic membrane. The H2S Sensor hydrophobic membrane allows gas to permeate through to the sensor electrolyte, while protecting the sensor from liquids. The current output of an H2S Sensor is typically connected to a transmitter or controller that is part of the overall gas detection system, where the current output is displayed as a real time value of H2S that the H2S Sensor has detected.

An H2S Sensor used in a fixed gas detection system is a consumable component and requires zero and span calibration and periodic replacement after several years of continuous use. An H2S gas Sensor can also be ranged for different levels of H2S detection, such as 0-50 ppm up to 0-5000 ppm. Typical replacement of a fixed gas detection system H2S Sensor is normally done by unplugging an old sensor from a detector head and plugging in a new sensor. H2S Sensors are sometimes “Smart,” having digital data in an on board circuit, which when connected to a gas detection transmitter is automatically uploaded into the transmitter for ease of use and continuous, maintenance-free operation.

The common elements used to complete an H2S gas Sensor Fixed Gas Detection System are the H2S sensor, detector, transmitter, controller, PLC, DCS and annunciation in the form of audible and visual alarms. An H2S Meter used for personnel safety monitoring of ambient areas includes PLC or DCS system alarm annunciation. It may also have audible and visual alarm device local annunciation to alert personnel in an area that the level of H2S detected by the H2S Sensor are above hazardous levels.
