The Right Catalytic Bead Sensor for You

Catalytic bead sensors operate on the principle that certain materials, such as platinum and palladium, catalyze or accelerate the burning of combustible gases. When the catalyst is applied to only one of two elements in a Wheatstone bridge circuit, the presence of combustible gas unbalances the bridge and generates an electrical output signal.

Catalytic bead sensors are made of a matched pair of sensor beads. Each active bead consists of a fine coil of platinum wire, embedded within a ceramic pellet. On the surface of the pellet is a layer of material which, when hot, acts as a catalyst to promote exothermic oxidation of flammable gases. During operation, the pellet and catalyst layer are heated by passing a current through the underlying coil. In the presence of a flammable gas or vapor, the hot catalyst allows oxidation to occur in a process similar to combustion. The exothermic reaction releases heat, causing the temperature of the catalyst, together with its underlying pellet and coil to rise. This increase in temperature results in a change in the electrical resistance of the coil, and this change in electrical resistance generates the catalytic bead sensor electrical output.

Each active bead is paired with a passive bead that contains no catalyst and is treated to ensure no flammable gas will oxidize on its surface. This “compensator” element is used as a reference resistance to which the sensor’s signal is compared, to remove the effects of environmental factors (other than the presence of a flammable gas).

All catalytic bead sensors must be contained in a flameproof enclosure, protected from the hazardous area by a steel-mesh flame arrestor. This flame arrestor is designed and tested to ensure that the temperature of any gas that exits from the flameproof enclosure is sufficiently cooled such that it cannot cause an explosion in the hazardous area.

All GDS Corp catalytic bead sensors are covered by a full one year warranty and comes backed by our company’s excellent reputation and support.
