This GDS Corp. Pipeline Stream Monitor (PSM) is designed to continuously monitor an exhaust manifold for combustible levels of hydrocarbon gases. Gases in the manifold typically contain high levels of moisture and particulates that would quickly disable an ambient sensor.
To create an environment compatible with the infrared sensor, the gas sample is pulled from the exhaust manifold by a vacuum created using a compressed-air aspirator. The sample is initially cooled to a maximum of 150F using a coil of stainless steel tubing. Once cooled, the sample is drawn through a moisture and particulate filter, flow meter and sample flow cell. A three-way calibration valve allows for the easy injection of reference calibration gas.
The SmartIR sensor uses infrared absorption to detect the presence of unburned hydrocarbon gases that may build up in the exhaust mainfold. The sensor output is a three-wire bridge signal compatible with the GDS C2 Quad Protector Controller. For this application, four identical panels are used to monitor individual exhaust manifolds. The C2 Quad Protector controller generates two common level alarms and four individual per-channel alarms.
