Deciding On the Right CO2 Sensor

When determining the type of sensors needed for any application, GDS Corp experts will guide you through the decision making process.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas composed of two oxygen atoms bonded to a single carbon atom. Green plants use carbon dioxide during photosynthesis to make sugars and other organic compounds needed for plant growth and development. CO2 is also a byproduct of fossil fuel combustion, the burning of vegetable matter, fermentation and other chemical processes.

Since carbon dioxide is an inert gas, electrochemical sensors which depend on the target gas reacting with the electrolyte in the sensor will not work. The most common technique for the detection is carbon dioxide is infrared absorption. Using technology similar to that used in infrared combustible gas detectors, and infrared CO2 gas sensor can be designed to detect concentrations of carbon dioxide from 500 parts-per-million to 100 percent by volume.

The GDS-IR sensor for carbon dioxide is a complete self-contained optical gas detector with 4-20mA output. The GDS-IR includes sensing and reference elements that are self-compensating for optical integrity, alignment and source output. The 316 stainless steel construction enables the GDS-IR infrared carbon dioxide detector to operate in the harshest environments. Routine calibrations are not required making this gas detector virtually maintenance free.

We’re always happy to answer any questions or concerns you might have. Our application engineers are familiar with the CO2 sensor applications, and we’d also be glad to talk with you about any of the other numerous products we develop and manufacture.
