The Most Reliable Calibration Gases

Calibration is an essential part of your maintenance plan for your gas detection system. Accurate and timely calibration helps to ensure basic sensor operation and verify the sensors response to alarm levels. Just as important is the quality of the calibration gas. Expired gas, or gas not used according to the procedures recommended by the manufacturer, may compromise the integrity of the gas detection system. Ultimately, this can mean serious safety risks for users. GDS Corp wants to be a part of making certain this does not happen.

Three important parameters need to be considered when you calibrate a gas detector with a calibration gas cylinder. First, look at the concentration level for toxic gases, which is usually measured in parts per million (ppm) or look at the percent lower explosive limit (LEL) for combustible gases. GDS Corp recommends that the calibration gas concentration should be between 25 percent and 75 percent of the sensors full scale reading. Expired calibration gases should not ever be used always check the date stamped on the cylinder.

Second, ensure the flow rate is appropriate for the gas you plan to use. Generally, a rate of 0.5 liters per minute is correct. For some highly reactive gases, such as chlorine or chlorine dioxide, the recommended flow rate is 1.0 liter per minute. The regulator included in the calibration kit sets the flow rate.

Third, the calibration gases need to be presented to the sensor correctly. GDS Corp offers a calibration cup which covers the sensor head to make certain the gas and sensor are in contact during the calibration procedure.

GDS Corp offers a full line of NIST certified calibration gas cylinder as well as calibration kits that include the gas cylinder, fixed flow 0.5 or 1.0 liter per minute regulator, flexible tubing, calibration cup and convenient carrying case.
